Mapping Mountains – Significant Name Changes – Y Pedwarau

Foel Eryr (SN 065 320)

This is the thirty fifth post under the heading of Significant Name Changes, and the following details are in respect of a hill that was surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000 on the 12th September 2015.

The hill is part of Mynydd Preseli, which is a group of hills situated in the south-western part of mid and west Wales.  The hill is positioned between the small communities of Brynberian to the north-east, Pontfaen to the west north-west and Maenclochog to the south south-east.

Foel Eryr (SN 065 320)

The hill appeared in the 400m P30 list on Geoff Crowder’s website under the name of Cerrig Lladron, which is a name that appeared close to the summit of the hill on Ordnance Survey maps of the day.  This listing of hills is now co-authored with Aled Williams and known as Y Pedwarau.

Cerrig Lladron

During my early hill listing I paid little regard to name placement on a map, or the meaning of names and to what feature the name was appropriately applied to.  Therefore I prioritised names for listing purposes that I now understand are inappropriate, and Cerrig Lladron is such an example as this name has been consistently applied by the Ordnance Survey to a patch of stony ground to the north-east of this hill’s summit, whilst the same maps are consistent in applying the name Foel Eryr to the hill and not just to a feature on the hill.

This is backed-up by the name used on the panoramic viewfinder at the summit of the hill where Foel Eryr is inscribed as the name of the hill.  Therefore the name this hill is now listed by in Y Pedwarau (Europeaklist May 2013 and Haroldstreet January 2014) is Foel Eryr which appears on current Ordnance Survey maps.
