Mapping Mountains – Summit Relocations – The Fours

Willstone Hill (SO 485 943)

This is the twenty ninth post under the heading of Summit Relocations, with the survey that resulted in the following details taking place on the 24th September 2016 in good, clear albeit windy conditions in the company of Mark Trengove who had suggested the walk, and Bob Kerr.

The twenty ninth major summit relocation initiated from a survey with the Trimble GeoXH 6000 was conducted in the hills of the Long Mynd, with the hill positioned between the town of Church Stretton to the west south-west and the small community of Cardington to the east north-east.

The hill is listed as a 400m Sub-Four (The Fours published by Europeaklist and Haroldstreet), these are the English 400m hills with 30m minimum drop, with Sub-Fours being those hills that have a minimum 20m and under 30m of drop.

The name of the hill is Willstone Hill and its previously listed summit position corresponded with where the 403m spot height appears on Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer maps, this is at SO 48528 94341.  This point is on grassed heathland which forms a part of this hill’s rounded summit.  However, as with many hills in this area Willstone Hill has an attractive small outcrop of volcanic rock situated on it.  This rock outcrop is positioned on the northern extremity of the summit area and its high point was Trimbled as being 404.7m (404.650m, converted to OSGM15)) high compared to the high point of the adjacent rounded summit; 404.0m (404.024m, converted to OSGM15).

This is not a dramatic relocation in distance from the old to the new summit, but the relocation from the rounded heathland summit to the rock outcrop necessitates a Summit Relocation post, and therefore the position of the relocated summit is at SO 48564 94370 and is the top of a small rock outcrop, this is not given a spot height on current Ordnance Survey maps but the Trimble result gave it as 0.63m higher when compared to the high point of its adjacent heathland top.

The full details for the hill are:
